Tango Toppers: Osvaldo Pugliese

Getting to know tango music is quite a task. While you may hear it being played everytime you dance, you don’t always know the names of the composers and performers. Who’s song is ‘Poema’? (Francisco Canaro) Who wrote ‘Llorar por una mujer (“quererla y no tenerla“)? (Enrique Rodriguez) Who plays ‘La Cumparsita’? (just about everyone) So here’s an idea: I’m going to publish a top 10 of popular songs per composer/orchestra. The data I use comes from last.fm.

The first one: Osvaldo Pugliese, best known for his ‘La Yumba’. How does that sound again? Well, see if you recognize this song:

The Pugliese top 10 of songs on Last.fm goes like this:

#1 La Yumba 1617
#2 Recuerdo 1016
#3 Desde El Alma 878
#4 Gallo Ciego 612
#5 Mala Junta 459
#6 La Mariposa 417
#7 Chique 349
#8 Despues 295
#9 Malandraca 289
#10 Chacabuqueando 267

And here you can listen to some of those:

Last tango in Brussels

The milonga at La Tangueria this weekend had a kind of a special event: it was the Dirk’s last Belgian milonga before he left for Buenos Aires. He go to show off and kissed a lot of women, so he was beaming. We wish him great times in Argentina and hope he starts writing soon on his blog “Dirk in Buenos Aires“.

I didn’t have my ‘real’ camera with me, so I apologize for the sorry quality of the pictures.

Elfje has just organized her first milonga at her new atelier/garage/home: Atelier11. She had taken care of a nice wooden floor, cosy decoration and excellent food. The music was spun by James and Peter E., and the rest of us just danced.

One of the milongas we missed during the summer months is Sergio & Gisela’s milonga at the Pianofabriek. So we were happy to go there again on Sunday. The Pianofabriek has been renovated, the actual tango venue was lightly larger, but luckily as hot as ever and with the same solid pilars in the middle that always show up in front of your face when you try to avoid another couple. The DJ, who was someone I hadn’t seen before, was actually quite good. Anyone have a name?

Last Saturday was also Brussels’ yearly Nuit Blanche. For us tango lovers, this meant a milonga at the Vaudeville, our favourite venue from previous Brussels Tango Festivals. Peculiar about this night was that there were almost more spectators than dancers. And that it stopped at 1AM.
