I went to El Dorado (Humbeek) without my camera because I just wanted to dance and relax. During one of the tandas there was a loud shout from the entrance and a lot of sudden movement. What I feared turned out to be true: some young thugs had rushed in, taken the cash register and ran away. What happened after that is not sure, I’ve heard different versions. Apparently they were three, they had been drinking in the El Dorado café before, two of them were captured by, if I’m not mistaken, Philippe and Peter, and I’m not sure if Sergio got his money back. I can only hope so.
The Brussels/Belgian tango scene is that of an in-crowd, where people feel relatively safe for burglary and violence, because we all more or less know each other. Most of us don’t go through too much trouble to secure our wallets or cameras at milongas. It’s a pity to have this wake-up call. The atmosphere turned weird and a bit grim, certainly when we were stopped twice in the middle of a tanda by the police with a call for witnesses. I have little illusions about how severely the responsible kids will be punished, or what the chance is they will continue on the same path. I guess we’ll all have to be more careful. It’s a pity.
What better way to spend Valentine than a good milonga where you can dance with that special one, or where you can forget about the fact that the special one is not there? That’s why Gisela & Sergio organized a Valentine salon, with plenty of hearts and way too much red light, which is why most of the pictures have a red shine, except for those that I just resolved to make black and white. Earth, Wind and Fire were there too, cortina-wise, and got a little post-milonga tanda after the “dos ultimas” were finished. I danced more than I photographed, which is why I have to thank Anneleen and Inge for helping me out in the busy moments.

Eugenia & Diego from Nosotros held their 6th anniversary milonga last Saturday, and, just like last year, they sure knew how to welcome their guests. There was live music by Cimadevilla (bandoneón) et Di Paolo (guitar), with even Eugenia singing at some point. At midnight there was champaign and cake for everyone. And in the mean time we all danced to the music DJ Diego played. Were it not for my car having been towed away by Dacar (apparently people in Schaarbeek do their “déménagement” in the middle of the night, or so they claim), it would have been a perfect evening!

Sergio has gotten into the habit of using Earth, Wind & Fire’s Greatest hits for cortinas and I think that’s just great. It also helps keeping the energy and the temperature high, as we noticed again at last weekend’s Pianofabiek milonga. I arrived a bit late and had to rush to take enough pictures in between the dancing.
