Last year a lot of Belgian dancers went to Poland to participate in a movie shoot. That movie, Tango Libre by Belgian director Frédéric Fonteyne, will be released in the cinema later this year, but is now doing the tour of the film festivals and has just won the SPECIAL ORIZZONTI JURY PRIZE in Venice.
JC is a prison guard. He is a man without a story, hiding behind rules. He only has one fantasy: Tango dancing. One night, in dance class, JC meets Alice. They dance together.The next day he sees her again in the prison visiting room. First visiting one man, then another…Alice is the wife of two inmates, Fernand and Dominic, whom she follows with her son from prison to prison.The prison rules prohibit the guards from socializing with inmates’ family members.For the first time in his life, JC is about to break the rules.
I look forward to seeing the film. Your readers may be interested to know that Mariano ‘Chicho’ Frumboli plays the ringleader of the prison’s tough Argentinean inmates who is asked by Fernand to teach him tango after realising its physical and emotional importance to his free-spirited wife.
