Tango Masivo means tango with mass and thats exactly the keynote of this orquesta. Strong melodic lines with a rhythm that underlines the heavy movement in order to take the dancer and music lover into a tango trip.

Guitarist/contrabassplayer Kay Sleking brought the tangueros from Buenos Aires, Spain, France, Peru, Finland and The Netherlands together. The repertoire exists of new arrangement and compositions of pianist, arranger en composer Julian Peralta (Astillero), who is the pianist of the orquesta. The bandoneon section is formed by Mariano Gonzales Calo (Astillero), Victor Hugo Villena (Gotan Project, El Despues) and Claudio Constantini. The violin section is formed by Martijn van der Linden (Astillero, Sexteto Canyengue), Suvi Myohanen, Alicia Alonso and cello player Eva van de Poll (Pavadita).

Next to instrumental pieces tango singer Maria Jose Ortiz captures you in the lyrics of longing and solitude.

Patio de Tango (Bouche-à-Oreille, Etterbeek) welcomes another special guest: the Alexandro Ziegler quartet plays a concert at the popular milonga on Thursday February 17th: “a bandoneón, a double bass, a violin, (a) piano, a samurai hairstyle, two red shoes and one Borat moustache” says one fan who saw them in 2010 and she adds: “absolutely stunning“.

Never before have I seen or heard so much joy during a performance in the Bozar concert hall. The showmanship of one of the pianists, who finished his pieces with flamboyant flourishes and winked at the audience as if to share a joke, caused the house to burst out with laughter. World champion tango dancers Daniel Nacucchio and Cristina Sosa added a ‘wow’ effect, as they impressed with their passionate dancing and daring kicks. And as soloist Juan Carlos Godoy shuffled onto stage, he had won over the audience’s hearts before he even started to sing.

I don’t think the dancing style of Daniel and Cristina was liked excessively by the tangueros present, but there was certainly a ‘wow effect’, even if it was just “Wow, only one inch lower and that would have really hurt”.

Two years ago,  Gustavo Santaolalla, of Bajofondo Tango Club fame, created a real labour of love: he invited a number of ‘old’ tango musicians (from the ’40 – ’50 era) and re-recorded them together.  The result was a splendid record called “Café de los Maestros” and with it goes a making-of movie of the same name, that is quite exceptional too. Now there is also the orchestra of the maestros, and they come to Brussels!

On Tuesday October 19th, BOZAR presents Buenos Aires tango : Café de los Maestros. This is a unique opportunity to see and hear bandoneon legends  as Osvaldo Montes, Miguel Angel Varvello, Hector Silva, Juan Jose Mosalini live! They are joined by the dancers Daniel Nacucchio and Cristina Sosa.

In Brussels there is a 4-day event “Argentina Festival” (Espace Senghor), with on Friday a concert by Orquesta Tipica Misteriosa Buenos Aires, followed by a milonga. On Saturday there are movies and on Sunday there’s a big BBQ (‘asado‘).

And in Liège La Mi’Lune organizes on Saturday the “Milonga de la Independencia” with the orchestra Tango Tinto & Sergio Gobi and a demo by Adrian and Amanda.

Who are Adrian & Amanda Costa?

“Specialists of the Villa Urquiza Style, their tango rimes with simplicity, elegance of the abrazo, of the walk, a unique interpretation of musicality. Watching them is living their tango full of emotions, feelings and pleasure; and it is also visualising the music and its instruments.  Rather than simply teaching, they wish to transmist their passion and share their talents. “

They will give some workshops in both Brussels at the Villa Urquiza School (28 May) and Liège at La Mi’Lune (29 and 30 May).

Not only was the music excellent, the musicians were also popular, specifically some of the bandoneon players, as the ladies in front of the stage kept repeating.

The Bouche-à-Oreille also turned out to be a very classy place to have a milonga. DJ Diego mixed his tangos, valses and milongas, and all had fun.

Fado & Tango – two port cultures that emerged in the 19th century in Lisbon and Buenos Aires out of marginal neighbourhoods. A mix of feelings: passion, pain, loneliness, desire, tragedy, love, joy and “saudade“.

If anyone needed proof that fado and tango go well together, all they needed was the concert/performance “Fado & Tango – une seule passion” in Etterbeek. An evening filled with beautiful music and dancing in a very stylish theatre.
