In the beautiful foyer of the 1869 Brugse Stadsschouwburg, there was an equally classy milonga, organized by Pasos de Brujas. The planned demo by Alma & Aldo had been cancelled, but we were lucky to have Sonja & Sven and their mentors Marisa & Oliver in the milonga, who gave us a double demo.

DJ Marie-Jeanne entertained the dancers with a mix of classics and some alternative tango, in an absolutely stunning venue.

Last weekend Brussels welcomed El Pibe Sarandi, a Buenos Aires maestro with more then 50 years of tango experience. Benedicte and Jens-Ingo invited him to the Brussels Royal Yacht Club. He gave a demo together with Benedicte of his smooth milonga style.

The BRYC is a beautiful place to dance; check out the collection of flags on the wall!

Every now and then Dante & Monik organize a milonga with performances in La Tentation. This weekend it was the Enrique Nicolas Tango Quartet performing, as well as a demo of both Monik & Dante (tango) and Julio Garrido (zapateo).

The light was low and very red, therefore most pictures are black and white.

Maryline & Vincent @ Garage 29

It’s always a pleasure to see Maryline & Vincent perform, and so I didn’t want to miss the demo they would give after their workshop at Garage29.

It was also the first time I went to this … garage, and I rather liked its character. The light was a bit difficult on the dancefloor, but thanks to the softboxes close to the bar I could actually take some nice portraits.

DJ Andres, aided by the cutest cortinas, kept spirits high and we danced until way after we were supposed to leave. The two cats that live there, allowed us to stay, although slightly reluctantly, as cats do.

“La Tubatango” in Patio de Tango

For those of you who like dancing to live bands, there is the concert of Tuba Tango this Thursday at the Patio de Tango. This is an rather unusual tango orchestra, with bandoneon, clarinet, guitar and, obviously, a tuba. They’ve existed, with changing musicians, since 1967. Catch them on their European tour!

La Tubatango’s objective is to relive the festive spirit of the tango from the 1900s; times when any celebration would have the citizens of Buenos Aires go out and walk down the streets following the bands, ‘fanfarrias’ and carnival groups.

The summer is an active tango time in Brussels, an example of that is the new milonga on Saturdays: Milonga du Soleil. Last week’s edition featured a demo from a couple teachers from Paris: Ariane and Ozgur. Ozgur has been coming to Brussels often, and never fails to look good on pictures, partly because he makes his partners smile. And some of the people watching too.

Milonga du Soleil is organized by pretty much the same people as the Marathon del Chocolate. Busy guys, Andrej and Sidar. The venue is in what seems to be a converted garage, and the floor and music leave nothing to be desired.

Tangauchos in Belgium

The tango show “Tangauchos” by La Compagnia de Mariano Galeano is coming to Belgium in August with performances in Brussels and Leuven. We know Mariano from his appearances in various events in Belgium, like the 2009 Brussels Tango Festival. In Tangauchos he combines Argentinian folklore and the urban music from Rio de la Plata, in all its facets. He shows that, while they use common basic techniques, the styles developed on their own. In some pieces you even see four styles next to one another: salon, milonguero, fantasia, modern.

Tangauchos sera en tournée en Europe à l’été 2011. Allez les voir, cela vaut la peine. C’est vivant, avec des styles variés, un scénario plein de petites histoires, et très impressionnant sur le plan technique.

Thursday brought us a concert by the Argentinian/Italian group Tango Tinto, in the magnificent La Tentation. Tango music to dance to, and that’s what everybody did with pleasure. Thank to Monik & Dante for the organisation!

On Thursday, Patio de Tango welcomed Andrea Reyero and Sebastian Misse for the second time (they were here also in July 2010). Their demo was traditional with some spectacular notes, and was a good reminder of how it’s supposed to be.

DJ Mala was in good shape and made everyone dance until the very end.

The Patio is getting a good reputation for live tango concerts. Last week’s performance of the Alejandro Ziegler Quartet was a good example of why that is. With piano, double bass, violin and bandoneon, they played immaculate versions of famous tango songs. Not only that, once the first two numbers were over and the audience had been watching and listening, they also started dancing and didn’t stop until the end. Marie-Jeanne kept that smooth vibe going in between the sets of the orchestra. An excellent evening!

The demo of the Argentinian champions at the Patio de Tango was outstanding, and the crowd kept asking for ‘Otra’!

Maria Ines Bogado & Sebastian Jimenez might be young, but they’re very talented and respectful of the tradition of tango.

It was probably one of the last times we could see Eugenia before the birth of her son.

Nosotros has invited María Inés Bogado and Sebastián Jimenez, the 2010 world champions in tango salon & vals, to Brussels. They will give two days of workshops (18/19 Dec) and also perform at a special Saturday Patio de Tango. For details on the workshops, check the Nosotros website.

Tangoquerido had invited two young Argentinian dancers to the WABO practica: Mario de Camillis and Barbara Wainnright. Their demonstrations were dynamic and skillfull, and their little act with the old milonguero couple (and that’s all I will tell – no spoilers) is original and funny.

The rest of the evening, we all danced to DJ Philippe’s tandas. I hadn’t heard him since the Milonga @ Kiosque 2009, so that was a pleasant surprise.

Mario de Camillis et Barbara Wainnright in Brussels

Tangoquerido has invited Mario de Camillis et Barbara Wainnright to Brussels for some workshops and a demonstration. They are two young dancers from Argentina, who started dancing together in 2009 and fared very well in the VII Tango World Championship and the VII Tango Metropolitan Championship, both in Buenos Aires. The workshops are on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 November and the demo is during the practica of Thursday 25th. More info on Tangoquerido!

Last Sunday was a big tango event at the Roma in Antwerp. Not only was Orquestra Silencio playing, The Macana brothers also were there for some cool demos.

Los Hermanos Macana are, as you could guess, two men and they take turns in leading and following. Their act alternates between high speed, highly technical tango and funny intermezzos. They have some clown talent lost between them.

At some point they started playing with some members of the audience and invited a local tanguera, Annemie, to help them in the performance. She obliged and did that very well.

For the rest it was a packed dance evening and the floor was hardly ever empty.

Maryline & Vincent @ Magic Mirrors

Tuesday used to be the day there was no tango event in Brussels, and now it’s becoming the day with “l’embarras du choix“. not only is there a weekly practica at Floreo, but there is also a temporary weekly event at Place St Catherine: the Magic Mirrors tent (until the end of November).

The place is not only being used for tango on Tuesdays, there is e.g. a big evening on Saturday 30 Oct. Marisa & Oliver organize a workshop, followed by a milonga. Most importantly, there will be a demonstration by Maryline & Vincent. For those who don’t know them, they are one of the legendary tango couples in Belgium, a joy to see dance together. It has been a while since they have performed together so this is a great opportunity!

Cafe de los maestros @ Brussels (free tickets!)

Two years ago, Gustavo Santaolalla, of Bajofondo Tango Club fame, created a real labour of love: he invited a number of ‘old’ tango musicians (from the ’40 – ’50 era) and re-recorded them together. The result was a splendid record called “Café de los Maestros” and with it goes a making-of movie of the same name, that is quite exceptional too. Now there is also the orchestra of the maestros, and they come to Brussels!

On Tuesday October 19th, BOZAR presents Buenos Aires tango : Café de los Maestros. This is a unique opportunity to see and hear bandoneon legends as Osvaldo Montes, Miguel Angel Varvello, Hector Silva, Juan Jose Mosalini live! They are joined by the dancers Daniel Nacucchio and Cristina Sosa.

As a special treat, milonga.be has 25 two-person tickets to give away! Starting on next Monday 4 Oct at 8:00 in the morning, you can request one pair of tickets on this special contest page. After the first 25 people get their tickets, the page will be closed. So be quick!

3 Oct: Tango Solidario @ Bouche à Oreille

On Sunday Oct 3, Nosotros organizes a special fundraiser event “Tango Solidario” for a very noble cause: buying instruments so a group a of talented Argentinian kids can continue a musical training that gives them opportunities, pride and dignity.

The goal of the evening of 3 / 10 will be to raise funds for Orchestra School Ingeniero White, in the poor village of Bahía Blanca, Argentina. Since 2008, the school cares for children at the end of their school day. So they keep them away from the dangers of the streets: drugs, prostitution, delinquency, abandonment… The children first learn how to play an instrument, in a methodical and friendly way, and then to play classical music in an orchestra. They receive quality training that could help them in the professional world. By playing, they construct golden wings for the future. By receiving respect and meeting other children, they learn to return the respect and friendliness.

The event starts at 7PM, the DJ is Mala (Nina) and the dress code is ‘elegant’ – which means: make an effort The organisers promise that the evening will be filled with surprises!

Wednesday saw the visit of Ozgur Demir and Marina Marques in Tangobar. They gave a demo with some acrobatic moves and a very well received milonga.

This was also the debut of DJ Daniel Rossi, a.k.a. “he who makes people dance with excellent music on a itsy-bitsy iPod nano“.
