Exceptional: El Flaco Dany workshops + milonga in BRYC

Legendary Argentine maestro Daniel Garcia, nicknamed El Flaco Dany, is coming to Belgium! Some call him the best milonga con traspie dancer in the world. In any case, he has been dancing for 50 years and is a famous teacher and performer. He will give workshops on Friday 26, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28, you can find the topics and hours on the Brussels agenda. There are still places, but better be quick!

But there’s not only the workshops. Organizers Benedicte and Jens-Ingo have also found a unique place for a tango salon on Friday: the Brussels Royal Yacht Club. Built in 1906, next to the Brussels Canal, this is a place with history and an amazing view, certainly at night. Your DJ is Jens-Ingo and of course there will be a demo of Flaco Dany and Lucia Mirzan. The milonga is on Friday night, 26 August, don’t miss it!

200 years of Argentinian Independence

Today 25 May is the day the Argentinians celebrate “Revolucion de Mayo“ or their indepence day. This cannot go unnoticed here in Belgium.

In Brussels there is a 4-day event “Argentina Festival” (Espace Senghor), with on Friday a concert by Orquesta Tipica Misteriosa Buenos Aires, followed by a milonga. On Saturday there are movies and on Sunday there’s a big BBQ (‘asado‘).

And in Liège La Mi’Lune organizes on Saturday the “Milonga de la Independencia” with the orchestra Tango Tinto & Sergio Gobi and a demo by Adrian and Amanda.

Who are Adrian & Amanda Costa?

“Specialists of the Villa Urquiza Style, their tango rimes with simplicity, elegance of the abrazo, of the walk, a unique interpretation of musicality. Watching them is living their tango full of emotions, feelings and pleasure; and it is also visualising the music and its instruments. Rather than simply teaching, they wish to transmist their passion and share their talents. “

They will give some workshops in both Brussels at the Villa Urquiza School (28 May) and Liège at La Mi’Lune (29 and 30 May).

BTF: Monday salon @ Les Bains::Connectives

Monday was the last salon of the festival, and it was held in the former swimming pool of Les Bains::Connectives. We started with a small crowd, more people came around 22h until the floor was filled. DJ Ben kept everyone dancing and while we had been afraid that it would be cold, it was quite the opposite. A nice closing night to a memorable festival.

Five intensive days of Tango Festival is quite a lot. I did a couple of workshops, visited all the salons and took more than 2000 pictures. I published over 400 of them, and I hope you enjoy seeing them and maybe recognizing yourself with that pretty Swiss girl or with the Swedish guy with the funny colgada-habit. I had a great time and I hope you can say the same. See you next year!

BTF: Sunday salon @ Vaudeville

“Surprise and Impro” was the name of the Sunday milonga of the festival. The biggest surprise, and unfortunately a very unpleasant one, is that we were not allowed to take any videos or pictures during the improvisations. One of the most exciting parts of the festival has been lost for eternity. Personally, I think this is a pity. Last year’s videos of the impros were very popular on Youtube and showed clearly why the festival is worth visiting.

Earlier in the evening there was a performance by Jorge Dispari & La Turca, a well-known couple of Argentinian tangueros.

After that, there were the improvisations, which for reasons cited above, can only be described in words:

The first two names were both men (by mistake, we guess): Oliver and Adrian. In the true spirit of improvisation, they danced with each other, changing leader/follower roles all the time. Somewhere between a tango and a wrestling match, it was fun to watch.
Then Vincent got to dance with Cecilia, but only after a while, as she let him chase her in the beginning. Hard to get, maybe, but he got her all right and they showed some spectacular tango in the process.
Damian danced with Alejandra, and they both seemed to enjoy it a lot, because they danced together repeatedly after the improvisations too.
Marisa had no idea what kind of trouble she was getting into when Horacio was chosen to dance with her. He pretended he was cripple and danced in a way that was virtually impossible to follow. It might have been funny for the first 30 seconds, but after that it was just a clown making it hard for his follower to do anything esthetic.
Then Maria Belen & Pablo danced milonga. Since they’re both great dancers, and she is particularly beautiful, it was a dance that should not have stopped.
Which left El Pajaro with 3 women: Maryline, Noelia and Celine. This might have been a challenge for any other man, but not for El Pajaro. He danced cumbia with each separately, then with two and three at the same time, and kept the speedy embellishments coming all the time. An impressive finale!

Then of course there was plenty of dancing. DJ Tomaso was excellent, as ever, the venue was pretty like a fairy tale and the bar was easy to reach. By far the best venue of the festival!

BTF: Saturday salon @ Cityscape

How much fun can you have with an empty champaign bottle and a full glass? Quite some, it appears, as was proven on Saturday as the dance floor was cleared for a drinking/dancing game when DJ El Pajaro launched into a sequence of folk songs. You spin the bottle and whoever it points at when it stops has to … Well, just have a look.

There was obviously also some dancing.

Yesterday was the Opening Night of the Brussels Tango Festival in the Concert Noble venue. If it’s a good indicator of what’s to come, we’re in for 5 days of tango bliss.

MAESTROS
Since it’s the first time all the visiting and teaching maestros were present, they got to show off around 10PM. After that, it was a full dancefloor until 3AM.

Upcoming: Tango in de Maalbeek

This Saturday you can go dance at De Maalbeek in Brussels. The DJ is James, and the price is 6 euro. At 21h there is a concert by Trio Tango Sur and at 22h the dancing starts.

Beginners can follow an introductory course with Nathalie and Andres between 14h and 18h (see agenda for details).

The last evening of Polonaise Argentine was indeed a very special one. Alfredo Marcucci was having a great time, which showed in the performances with Piacevole and Sexteto Veritango.

There was a lot of dancing, with very little light so taking pictures without flash turned out to be challenging.

The performance of Maryline & Vincent was a feast for the eyes: they were called back twice by the audience for an encore.

De Roma, Leonor Wiesbauer & Kattendijk Tango present: the closing night of “Polonaise al Argentina”. Next Saturday (Nov 10) at 20:30 it starts with a concert by Piacevole that will combine Chopin and Piazolla music. There will also be a second concert by Sexteto Veritango, again with Alfredo Marcucci, and an undoubtedly spectacular performance by Maryline & Vincent.

There will obviously be ample opportunity to dance, be it during the Veritango concert, or on the music of DJ Billy. You know what to do this weekend!

Salon: Bal Tango Vampiro

The Bal Tango Vampiro, organized for Nuit Blanche 2007, was held in a very special place: the Queen Astrid Memorial building in Laken. The lighting was out of this world, and a lot of people had followed the dress code of ‘fourties’ suits & dresses.

The temperature was less than tropical and the floor more than challenging, but that didn’t keep anyone from dancing. There was also a splendid demonstration by Gladys & Juanito.

Nothing more fun than dancing to live music, in this case by Tango02.
