The first edition of Tango For Life was a big success. In an authentic chappel dozens of tango dancers were being rented for a tanda at a time to raise money for StuBru’s Music for Life.

At the end of the evening, the organizer Ivo was auctioned off for a multiple of the normal taxi price.

The Flemish radio station Studio Brussel (STUBRU) organizes for the sixth and last time “Music for Life“, a charity event under which flag anyone can organize a fundraiser, the proceeds of which go to this year’s cause: fighting child diarrhea, the most important cause of child mortality worldwide.
So this year there will also be a Tango For Life fundraiser: on Friday 23 Dec, you can go to the Altena chapel in Kontich, and pay to dance a tanda with one of 50 tango teachers from all over Belgium. There will be a cava lounge and music by DJs Ben, Stephan and MJee. Afterwards you can keep dancing at the after-party in La Luna, Antwerp.
So put it in your agenda! Friday 23 Dec, come spend your money for a good cause!

Tango Masivo in Belgium!

The newly started ‘Tango Masivo‘ comes to Belgium. Some of you might have seen Kay Sleking (guitar/bass) in Milonga de Gante with a duo, but now he comes with a big group of musicians!

Tango Masivo means tango with mass and thats exactly the keynote of this orquesta. Strong melodic lines with a rhythm that underlines the heavy movement in order to take the dancer and music lover into a tango trip.

Guitarist/contrabassplayer Kay Sleking brought the tangueros from Buenos Aires, Spain, France, Peru, Finland and The Netherlands together. The repertoire exists of new arrangement and compositions of pianist, arranger en composer Julian Peralta (Astillero), who is the pianist of the orquesta. The bandoneon section is formed by Mariano Gonzales Calo (Astillero), Victor Hugo Villena (Gotan Project, El Despues) and Claudio Constantini. The violin section is formed by Martijn van der Linden (Astillero, Sexteto Canyengue), Suvi Myohanen, Alicia Alonso and cello player Eva van de Poll (Pavadita).

Next to instrumental pieces tango singer Maria Jose Ortiz captures you in the lyrics of longing and solitude.

Photos: Los Hermanos Macana in de Roma

Last Sunday was a big tango event at the Roma in Antwerp. Not only was Orquestra Silencio playing, The Macana brothers also were there for some cool demos.

Los Hermanos Macana are, as you could guess, two men and they take turns in leading and following. Their act alternates between high speed, highly technical tango and funny intermezzos. They have some clown talent lost between them.

At some point they started playing with some members of the audience and invited a local tanguera, Annemie, to help them in the performance. She obliged and did that very well.

For the rest it was a packed dance evening and the floor was hardly ever empty.

Tango Antwerp Festival 2010: 21-24 May

It’s been a while since there was a real big tango festival in Antwerp, but next month there will be a special one: “Tribute to Osvaldo Zotto – Tango Antwerp Festival 2010“.

As you can see from the name, the festival has been dedicated to the recently deceased and much loved Osvaldo Zotto, who was supposed to perform at the festival. Instead, the festival opens with a solo from Gisele Avanzi, his last dance partner, and will also feature maestros like Roberto Herrera, Alejandra Mantiñan, Aoniken Quiroga, Frank Obregón, Jenny Gil, Anibal Lautaro, Valeria Maside, Mariano & Cosima Dias Campos, Lautaro Cancela and Lucila Segura. Music from the well-known orchestras Ensemble Hyperion, Tango 02, Mabel Gonzalez & Trio Herman Ruis and the DJs Felix Picerna, Francesco El Actor (Ar), Nettie & El Karangatang (NL).
Put it in your agendas: Friday May 21st until Monday May 24th, it’s festival time in Antwerp!

This weekend I was invited by Tristan from Tango De Carmen to visit an special milonga: in the Roma, a beautiful renovated old cinema from 1928, with the excellent quartet Tanguarda from Rotterdam and with live performances of Geraldine Rojas and Ezequiel Paludi, tango superstars.

As I expected, seeing Geraldine dance in real life is quite a treat. Not only are her and her husband amazing performers, she also is gorgeous in every single picture I took of her – and I took quite a lot of them.

They also brought some friends who did their own routine, but that was not of the same level.

The orchestra was a wonderful discovery. Although they come from the Netherlands, none of the four was Dutch. The Bulgarian pianist Maria Martinova was the one who introduced the songs and guided us through a repertoire that was mainly Piazzolla.

The DJ made some odd choices and seemed to be less organised as we’re used to in Brussels. Still, that did not stop the floor from being filled until the end.

This weekend: Geraldine & Ezequiel in Antwerp & Liege

Geraldine Rojas and Ezequiel Paludi are in Belgium this weekend and they’re doing a little tour: Friday and Saturday they’re in Antwerp with Tango De Carmen, giving several workshops and performing at the Friday ‘Grand Milonga’ (Casa 32) and the Saturday salon in the Roma. Sunday takes them to Liège, where they’re teaching and performing in collaboration with La Mi’Lune. Check the milonga.be agenda for details!

If you want to see them dance in real life, this is your chance. I will be going to – and taking pictures at – the Roma salon.

La Luna had its last milonga this Saturday at Diksmuidelaan, Berchem, before Daniel & Lin move to their new location. It was a crowded, hot night and the floor was packed, thanks to DJ Ben and lots of liquids.

The Sunday milonga of the festival was in an equally impressive location: the Bourla theatre. The shape of the dancefloor was slightly unusual, and so was the choice of music. The maestros did a last performance all together.

Waarom een Oscarnominatie voor Tanghi Argentini? Zal André de Argentijnse Tango leren dansen en de vrouw van zijn leven kunnen veroveren? Zal de passie zegevieren? Milonga: La Luna, March 2008

And they dance in Antwerp too, yes they do! I finally got out of my comfy Brussels chair and went to dance in La Luna. A really cosy venue, very nicely lit with candles and somewhat of a lightshow, with good music by DJ Peter and a friendly crowd. Amongst them some familiar faces and of course a friendly welcome by Daniel and Lin. I’ll be back!

If you ever wanted to check out the “Terminal Tango” milonga in Antwerp, then this weekend is your last chance for quite a while. The last Terminal Tango of the season takes place on Sunday March 2nd in the Cruise Terminal, with a scenic view over the Schelde. After that, you’ll have to wait until October for another one!.

The last evening of Polonaise Argentine was indeed a very special one. Alfredo Marcucci was having a great time, which showed in the performances with Piacevole and Sexteto Veritango.

There was a lot of dancing, with very little light so taking pictures without flash turned out to be challenging.

The performance of Maryline & Vincent was a feast for the eyes: they were called back twice by the audience for an encore.

Upcoming: Tango in de Roma (Antwerp)

De Roma, Leonor Wiesbauer & Kattendijk Tango present: the closing night of “Polonaise al Argentina”. Next Saturday (Nov 10) at 20:30 it starts with a concert by Piacevole that will combine Chopin and Piazolla music. There will also be a second concert by Sexteto Veritango, again with Alfredo Marcucci, and an undoubtedly spectacular performance by Maryline & Vincent.

There will obviously be ample opportunity to dance, be it during the Veritango concert, or on the music of DJ Billy. You know what to do this weekend!
