There was a Belgian couple from Gent in the Mundial de Tango 2009 in Buenos Aires. I hadn’t heard from the Belgian qualifications (two years ago it was called the Tango Marathon) and to be honest, I have never seen the dancers, Yannick Vanhove & Lieske De Vuyst, before either. Seems there must be an underground tango scene in Gent …

    Als tango uw leven is. Je zes uur per dag danst. Er al 9 jaar mee bezig bent, en je kan maar dat brengen…
    Een beetje bedroevend vindt ik dat eigenlijk.

    PS: Ik dans nog maar 5 jaar, en ik heb deze rakkers nog NOOIT ergens gezien. En ik kom toch wel regelmatig ergens! 😉

  3. Ik ga niet akkoord met bovenstaande reactie. Ik vindt dit een sterke performance, wij geven zelf showoptredens en weten wat het is om uren te trainen, choreografie maken enz…Ik ben trots op dit belgisch koppel. ik denk dat het niet gemakkelijk is om eerst en vooral geselecteerd te worden voor een WK je moet al iets in huis hebben. Het is altijd gemakkelijk om commentaar te geven, maar zelf dansen op dit niveau is wel wat anders.Misschien meneer Van Belleghem
    moet u het zelf eens proberen. U naam zegt ons ook niets..

  4. Beste mensen, laat nu eens iedereen zijn tango dansen. Ik vond het optreden in Porteño y Bailarin, zoals gezien op you tube, geslaagd.Waarom zouden jullie niet mogen deelnemen aan de kampioenschappen? En het resultaat was toch niet slecht?
    Ik hoop Lieske en Yannick op de tangoscene in Belgie te ontmoeten. Ik denk dat we jullie goed kunnen gebruiken om aan onze mensen de tango milonguero aan te leren. Doe voort met de verbetenheid waar jullie met bezig bent. En luister goed en kritisch naar de oude milongueros in BsAs.Er valt ook veel te leren in de achterbuurten bij minder bekende oude milongueros. Niet alleen de grote namen.

  6. Ik ging even kijken op hun website, en zag daar een filmpje van de kwalificatieronde… Ik was best wel onder de indruk ! En ik heb die mensen WEL al eens ontmoet… En gedanst met die meid… I’ve been around, you know :o) Hun leven draait inderdaad om de tango, en wat ze hier tonen bewijst dat ze iets in huis hebben. RESPECT !

  7. It’s common knowledge in Buenos Aires that the World Cup of tango (formerly Campeonato Mundial de Tango) is arranged every year. Those couples who have “paid their dues” by studying, teaching, and performing with the members of the Asociacion de Maestros, Bailarines y Coreografos de Tango Argentino are acknowledged. It’s impossible for a foreign couple to arrive in BsAs without being seen by the judges and win the competition. The winners are “selected” by the judges to launch the careers of promising performers who want to present themselves as salon dancers. They don’t have the skills to improvise tango on a social dance floor, so they continue to teach choreography around the world. Tango is a business for them. The world tango competition winners have been arranged since the first year. The city competition is the same. The prize money has increased substantially, but the number of participants has dropped.

    I hope that foreigners have realized they don’t have a chance at winning unless they host the festival director at a local festival like Japan did in 2009 when a Japanese couple won the world salon competition. Judges must agree on who will be chosen to win the title. Tallying the points has no relevance. It’s all about who you know, not how you dance.

    It is unfortunate that couples come to Buenos Aires to represent their countries with the hopes of bringing home a title. The judges know who will win before the competition begins. It’s not an unbiased competition at all. It’s the same in most international dance competitions. It’s about how well the judges know you.
